According to Abdullah Yusuf Ali’s commentary on S2(35) in his translation of the Quran, it was not on earth.  Quote :Was the Garden of Eden a place on this earth? Obviously not. All will be gathered in the end to give an account of themselves to Allah. Meaning that all living organisms are responsible for their actions. Therefore all must have a conscience, a sense of right and wrong. That implies that all these animals and birds and whatnot can do otherwise than their nature. An exercise in futility! The most idiotic statements that’s ever been heard or read is that the children of Israel are not Jews. A human lends to Allah? A goodly loan? The purpose of the loan is to fund warfare and to be remitted of sins and to be given a rich reward after death. A wild belief indeed! They say that Islam is a religion of peace. Well, if that be so, then surely friendships would be most necessary. What the Quran teaches Muslims about friendships with those who are not Muslims contradicts the statement of peace. Proof texts are quoted below.
