Surah 6

  1. 118 Eat of that over which the name of Allah hath been mentioned, if ye are believers in His revelations. 119 How should ye not eat of that over which the name of Allah hath been mentioned, when He hath explained unto you that which is forbidden unto you unless ye are compelled thereto. But lo! many are led astray by their own lusts through ignorance. Lo! thy Lord, He is Best Aware of the transgressors.

  2. 121 And eat not of that whereon Allah's name hath not been mentioned, for lo! it is an abomination. Lo! the devils do inspire their minions to dispute with you. But if ye obey them, ye will be in truth idolaters.

  3. 136 They assign unto Allah, of the crops and cattle which He created, a portion, and they say: "This is Allah's" - in their make-believe - "and this is for (His) partners in regard to us." Thus that which (they assign) unto His partners in them reacheth not Allah and that which (they assign) unto Allah goeth to their (so-called) partners. Evil is their ordinance.


Rodwell’s commentary on verse 136

Quote It appears to have been the custom of the idolatrous Arabs to set apart one portion of their fields for the Supreme God, and the other for the inferior gods represented by their idols. If any of the fruit happened to fall from the part consecrated to the idols into that consecrated to God, they restored it, but if the reverse occurred, they gave it to the idols. God, said they, is rich and can dispense with it. The secret, however, was that the idols' portion was reserved for the priests, Beidhawi. Freytag mentions the names of 73 idols worshipped by the Arab tribes, previous to Islam (Einl. pp. 270 and 342 357) and generally with Allah, as Supreme God. Unquote 


Surah 6

137 Thus have their (so-called) partners (of Allah) made the killing of their children to seem fair unto many of the idolaters, that they may ruin them and make their faith obscure for them. Had Allah willed (it otherwise), they had not done so. So leave them alone with their devices. 138 And they say: Such cattle and crops are forbidden. No-one is to eat of them save whom we will - in their make-believe - cattle whose backs are forbidden, cattle over which they mention not the name of Allah. (All that is) a lie against Him. He will repay them for that which they invent. 139 And they say: That which is in the bellies of such cattle is reserved for our males and is forbidden to our wives; but if it be born dead, then they (all) may be partakers thereof. He will reward them for their attribution (of such ordinances unto Him). Lo, He is Wise, Aware.


140 They are losers who besottedly have slain their children without knowledge, and have forbidden that which Allah bestowed upon them, inventing a lie against Allah. They indeed have gone astray and are not guided. 141 He it is Who produceth gardens trellised and untrellised, and the date-palm, and crops of divers flavour, and the olive and the pomegranate, like and unlike. Eat ye of the fruit thereof when it fruiteth, and pay the due thereof upon the harvest day, and be not prodigal. Lo! Allah loveth not the prodigals. 142 And of the cattle (He produceth) some for burdens, some for food. Eat of that which Allah hath bestowed upon you, and follow not the footsteps of the devil, for lo! he is an open foe to you.


143 Eight pairs: Of the sheep twain, and of the goats twain. Say: Hath He forbidden the two males or the two females, or that which the wombs of the two females contain ? Expound to me (the case) with knowledge, if ye are truthful. 144 And of the camels twain and of the oxen twain. Say: Hath He forbidden the two males or the two females, or that which the wombs of the two females contain; or were ye by to witness when Allah commanded you (all) this? Then who doth greater wrong than he who deviseth a lie concerning Allah, that he may lead mankind astray without knowledge. Lo! Allah guideth not wrongdoing folk.


145 Say: I find not in that which is revealed unto me aught prohibited to an eater that he eat thereof, except it be carrion, or blood poured forth, or swine flesh - for that verily is foul - or the abomination which was immolated to the name of other than Allah. But whoso is compelled (thereto), neither craving nor transgressing, (for him) lo! thy Lord is Forgiving, Merciful. 146 Unto those who are Jews We forbade every animal with claws. And of the oxen and the sheep forbade We unto them the fat thereof save that upon the backs or the entrails, or that which is mixed with the bone. That We awarded them for their rebellion. And lo! We verily are truthful.


Analysis. The Biblical Account.

Genesis 9 

 1 And God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth. 

2 The fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth and upon every bird of the heavens, upon everything that creeps on the ground and all the fish of the sea. Into your hand they are delivered. 

3 Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you. And as I gave you the green plants, I give you everything. 

4 But you shall not eat flesh with its life, that is, its blood. 

5 And for your lifeblood I will require a reckoning: from every beast I will require it and from man. From his fellow man I will require a reckoning for the life of man.

“Whoever sheds the blood of man,

    by man shall his blood be shed,

for God made man in his own image.


Some Restrictions Were Placed  At The Time Of Moses 

Leviticus 11 

1 And the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying to them, 

2 “Speak to the people of Israel, saying, These are the living things which you may eat among all the animals that are on the earth. 

3 Whatever parts the hoof and is cloven-footed and chews the cud, among the animals, you may eat. 

4 Nevertheless, among those that chew the cud or part the hoof, you shall not eat these: The camel, because it chews the cud but does not part the hoof, is unclean to you. 

5 And the rock badger, because it chews the cud but does not part the hoof, is unclean to you. 

6 And the hare, because it chews the cud but does not part the hoof, is unclean to you. 

7 And the pig, because it parts the hoof and is cloven-footed but does not chew the cud, is unclean to you. 

8 You shall not eat any of their flesh, and you shall not touch their carcasses; they are unclean to you.

9 “These you may eat, of all that are in the waters. Everything in the waters that has fins and scales, whether in the seas or in the rivers, you may eat. 

10 But anything in the seas or the rivers that do not have fins and scales, of the swarming creatures in the waters and of the living creatures that are in the waters, is detestable to you. 

11 You shall regard them as detestable; you shall not eat any of their flesh, and you shall detest their carcasses. 

12 Everything in the waters that do not have fins and scales is detestable to you.

13 “And these you shall detest among the birds;  they shall not be eaten; they are detestable: the eagle, the bearded vulture, the black vulture, 

14 the kite, the falcon of any kind, 

15 every raven of any kind, 

16 the ostrich, the nighthawk, the seagull, the hawk of any kind, 

17 the little owl, the cormorant, the short-eared owl, 

18 the barn owl, the tawny owl, the carrion vulture, 

19 the stork, the heron of any kind, the hoopoe, and the bat.

20 “All winged insects that go on all fours are detestable to you. 

21 Yet among the winged insects that go on all fours you may eat those that have jointed legs above their feet, with which to hop on the ground. 

22 Of them you may eat: the locust of any kind, the bald locust of any kind, the cricket of any kind, and the grasshopper of any kind. 

23 But all other winged insects that have four feet are detestable to you.

24 “And by these you shall become unclean. Whoever touches their carcass shall be unclean until the evening, 

25 and whoever carries any part of their carcass shall wash his clothes and be unclean until the evening. 

26 Every animal that parts the hoof but is not cloven-footed or does not chew the cud is unclean to you. Everyone who touches them shall be unclean. 

27 And all that walk on their paws, among the animals that go on all fours, are unclean to you. Whoever touches their carcass shall be unclean until the evening, 

28 and he who carries their carcass shall wash his clothes and be unclean until the evening; they are unclean to you.

29 “And these are unclean to you among the swarming things that swarm on the ground: the mole rat, the mouse, the great lizard of any kind, 

30 the gecko, the monitor lizard, the lizard, the sand lizard, and the chameleon. 

31 These are unclean to you among all that swarm. Whoever touches them when they are dead shall be unclean until the evening. 

32 And anything on which any of them falls when they are dead shall be unclean, whether it is an article of wood or a garment or a skin or a sack, any article that is used for any purpose. It must be put into water, and it shall be unclean until the evening; then it shall be clean. 

33 And if any of them falls into any earthenware vessel, all that is in it shall be unclean, and you shall break it. 

34 Any food in it that could be eaten, upon which water comes, shall be unclean. And all drink that could be drunk from every such vessel shall be unclean. 

35 And everything on which any part of their carcass falls shall be unclean. Whether oven or stove, it shall be broken in pieces. They are unclean and shall remain unclean for you. 

36 Nevertheless, a spring or a cistern holding water shall be clean, but whoever touches a carcass in them shall be unclean. 37 And if any part of their carcass falls upon any seed grain that is to be sown, it is clean, 

38 but if water is put on the seed and any part of their carcass falls on it, it is unclean to you.

39 “And if any animal which you may eat dies, whoever touches its carcass shall be unclean until the evening, 

40 and whoever eats of its carcass shall wash his clothes and be unclean until the evening. And whoever carries the carcass shall wash his clothes and be unclean until the evening.

41 “Every swarming thing that swarms on the ground is detestable; it shall not be eaten. 

42 Whatever goes on its belly, and whatever goes on all fours, or whatever has many feet, any swarming thing that swarms on the ground, you shall not eat, for they are detestable. 

43 You shall not make yourselves detestable with any swarming thing that swarms, and you shall not defile yourselves with them, and become unclean through them. 

44 For I am the Lord your God. Consecrate yourselves therefore, and be holy, for I am holy. You shall not defile yourselves with any swarming thing that crawls on the ground. 45 For I am the Lord who brought you up out of the land of Egypt to be your God. You shall therefore be holy, for I am holy.”

46 This is the law about beast and bird and every living creature that moves through the waters and every creature that swarms on the ground, 

47 to make a distinction between the unclean and the clean and between the living creature that may be eaten and the living creature that may not be eaten.


Matthew 15. Lord Of All Things.

1 Then Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem and said, 

2 “Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat.” 

3 He answered them, “And why do you break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? 

4 For God commanded, ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and, ‘Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.’ 

5 But you say, ‘If anyone tells his father or his mother, “What you would have gained from me is given to God,”  

6 he need not honor his father.’ So for the sake of your tradition you have made void the word  of God. 

7 You hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy of you, when he said:

8  “‘This people honors me with their lips,

    but their heart is far from me;

9  in vain do they worship me,

    teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’”

10 And he called the people to him and said to them, “Hear and understand: 

11 it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of the mouth; this defiles a person.” 

12 Then the disciples came and said to him, “Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this saying?” 

13 He answered, “Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be rooted up. 

14 Let them alone; they are blind guides.  And if the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit.” 

15 But Peter said to him, “Explain the parable to us.” 

16 And he said, “Are you also still without understanding? 

17 Do you not see that whatever goes into the mouth passes into the stomach and is expelled?  

18 But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person. 

19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander. 

20 These are what defile a person. But to eat with unwashed hands does not defile anyone.”


21 And Jesus went away from there and withdrew to the district of Tyre and Sidon. 

22 And behold, a Canaanite woman from that region came out and was crying, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is severely oppressed by a demon.” 

23 But he did not answer her a word. And his disciples came and begged him, saying, “Send her away, for she is crying out after us.” 

24 He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” 

25 But she came and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, help me.” 

26 And he answered, “It is not right to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs.” 

27 She said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' table.” 

28 Then Jesus answered her, “O woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you desire.” And her daughter was healed instantly. 

29 Jesus went on from there and walked beside the Sea of Galilee. And he went up on the mountain and sat down there. 30 And great crowds came to him, bringing with them the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute, and many others, and they put them at his feet, and he healed them, 

31 so that the crowd wondered, when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled healthy, the lame walking, and the blind seeing. And they glorified the God of Israel.

32 Then Jesus called his disciples to him and said, “I have compassion on the crowd because they have been with me now three days and have nothing to eat. And I am unwilling to send them away hungry, lest they faint on the way.” 

33 And the disciples said to him, “Where are we to get enough bread in such a desolate place to feed so great a crowd?” 

34 And Jesus said to them, “How many loaves do you have?” They said, “Seven, and a few small fish.” 

35 And directing the crowd to sit down on the ground, 

36 he took the seven loaves and the fish, and having given thanks he broke them and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. 

37 And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up seven baskets full of the broken pieces left over. 

38 Those who ate were four thousand men, besides women and children. 

39 And after sending away the crowds, he got into the boat and went to the region of Magadan.


Romans 14. Cherisher Of All Things 

1 As for the one who is weak in faith, welcome him, but not to quarrel over opinions. 

2 One person believes he may eat anything, while the weak person eats only vegetables. 

3 Let not the one who eats despise the one who abstains, and let not the one who abstains pass judgment on the one who eats, for God has welcomed him. 

4 Who are you to pass judgment on the servant of another? It is before his own master that he stands or falls. And he will be upheld, for the Lord is able to make him stand.

5 One person esteems one day as better than another, while another esteems all days alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind. 

6 The one who observes the day, observes it in honor of the Lord. The one who eats, eats in honor of the Lord, since he gives thanks to God, while the one who abstains, abstains in honor of the Lord and gives thanks to God. 

7 For none of us lives to himself, and none of us dies to himself. 

8 For if we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord's. 

9 For to this end Christ died and lived again, that he might be Lord both of the dead and of the living.

10 Why do you pass judgment on your brother? Or you, why do you despise your brother? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God; 

11 for it is written,

“As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to me,

    and every tongue shall confess  to God.”

12 So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God.

Do Not Cause Another to Stumble

13 Therefore let us not pass judgment on one another any longer, but rather decide never to put a stumbling block or hindrance in the way of a brother. 

14 I know and am persuaded in the Lord Jesus that nothing is unclean in itself, but it is unclean for anyone who thinks it unclean. 

15 For if your brother is grieved by what you eat, you are no longer walking in love. By what you eat, do not destroy the one for whom Christ died. 

16 So do not let what you regard as good be spoken of as evil. 

17 For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. 

18 Whoever thus serves Christ is acceptable to God and approved by men. 

19 So then let us pursue what makes for peace and for mutual upbuilding.

20 Do not, for the sake of food, destroy the work of God. Everything is indeed clean, but it is wrong for anyone to make another stumble by what he eats. 

21 It is good not to eat meat or drink wine or do anything that causes your brother to stumble. 

22 The faith that you have, keep between yourself and God. Blessed is the one who has no reason to pass judgment on himself for what he approves. 

23 But whoever has doubts is condemned if he eats, because the eating is not from faith. For whatever does not proceed from faith is sin.
